Background
Office building less than 1,000 m2, only occupied Mon-Fri but half hour, electricity meter data for Christmas day was much less than a typical unoccupied day e.g. a Sunday (see first image).

Investigation & action
Visit to building found A/C controllers (VRF system) with incorrect on/off time settings. Settings changed to reflect occupancy of building.

Outcome
50% reduction (approx.) in electrical baseload (see second image).

Cost of action & payback
£300 (approx. labour cost); simple payback: 6-8 weeks. Expected annual energy saving: £2.5k.

Recommendation
30 second, weekly review of half hour meter data (or receipt of weekly email alert) to ensure that new baseload is maintained.

Conclusion
Pick the low hanging fruit where you can, don’t assume having controls means efficient operation & continue to monitor to ensure that any solution is persistent.
